HEADLEY FUN RUN 2004
Another record year for the Headley Fun Run – 184 runners of all ages and abilities started the five mile Run at the Headley Pavilion on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 2007. The preparations on the morning of the Race all took place in the rain! We had had no rain for five weeks prior to the big day and, lo and behold, it decided to fall on the day. However, this did offer the competitors perfect running conditions although not ideal for the spectators.
The race had a slightly unorthodox start due to the fact that the Special Police Constables were one man short and, as a result, one organiser had to balance precariously on a wooden pole awaiting an all-clear signal from the police. Once the signal came, everyone shot off. It must be said that some of the younger runners take off like a bullet and there is a quiet satisfaction when, later in the race, some of the more senior runners overtake them when they have run out of steam!!
An added bonus for the race this year was that the French town twinned with Headley happened to be on a visit and some of their party decided to run. It adds another dimension of support when you round a bend to be hailed with shouts of “courage, courage mon brave”! You could see runners immediately straightening their shoulders and upping the pace.
None of this could take place without the many volunteers who give up their time both prior to and on the day of the Run. This is all spearheaded by Alec Brodrick who holds everything together and works tirelessly to ensure the day goes well. The Headley Fun Run Committee would also like to thank the St John Ambulance, the Special Police Constables, the Lions of Woolmer Forest, the British Legion and the Headley Sports Association.
Another big thank you to our sponsors who are the Bordon Post, Altis Industries, Blacknest Golf Club, Mr Richard Coates, Coomers, Grayshott Pottery, Headley Parish Council, Mr T Hedgecock, the Holly Bush Inn, Peter Leete & Partners and Rooney Signs. Finally, we are pleased to report that, due to the large entry, we were in a position to make donations of £100 each to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and the Naomi House Children's Hospice. Perhaps if you were a spectator in 2007, it inspired you to compete in 2008? Well, you will have the opportunity on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May 2008 starting from the Headley Sports Pavilion at 10.00 am. See you there!
