Harry was serving as an acting Corporal with the 1st Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 12th May 1917 aged 35. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial for soldiers with no known grave.

1911 Census. A domestic butler living in Broughton, North Newington and Drayton, Oxfordshire with wife, Eva and 4 children. William 6, Eva 5, Frederick 2 and Beatrice 4 months.

The following information has been provided by Helen Mirwald who is researching names on the Kingsley War Memorial, where Harry also gets a mention. “In 1913 the family moved to Hampshire as Harry became the butler at Headley Park, the home of the McAndrews, the shipping family.”

He was probably conscripted after the Military Service Act extended conscription to married men in May 1916. He enlisted into the Hampshire Regiment, “C” Company, 1st Battn. (No. 25069) at Headley (date unknown) and fought in France and Flanders. He was killed in action in France 13^th May 1917, probably during the Battle of Arras. His young master, Charles Arthur McAndrew was killed just seventeen days earlier. At about this time his family moved to The Straits, Kingsley (his daughter Mary was admitted to Kingsley School December 1917).

Married here [Headley Parish Church].

He was born at 'Whitmore, Frensham" by Registrar's Certificate got Nov 1924. I wrote saying her age at marriage would be right. She was married here aged 31, in name of PACEY, but in fact her name was BUDD (illegitimate). Living at 'Weetie', Headley Down during WW1 - son Henry Eli was killed.

Regimental/militaiy info Royal Navy Officer’s Steward 3rd Class served on HMS Good Hope which was the flagship of Admiral Cradock’s 4th Cruiser Division in the S. Atlantic.

She was sunk with all hands (920) by the German Cruisers Schamhorst and Gneisenau of Admiral von Spee’s Pacific Squadron at the Battle of Coronel which was fought off the coast of Chile on 1st November 1914. Arthur was 20 and single.

Other interesting information:

His name appears on the Portsmouth Royal Naval War Memorial on Southsea Common which is in memory of the Naval Ranks and Ratings of the Empire who fell in the Great War and have no other grave than the sea. The name is in the 1914 section facing the sea on Panel 5 under ‘Officers Steward’.

Parents:

William Edward and Elizabeth Chisnall who lived at Longcross, Arford and who are buried in Headley Churchyard.

Arthur’s father served in the Boer War and was involved at the siege of Ladysmith.
Arthur was the third of seven children born into an army family. His two elder brothers Albert and George were boy soldiers who survived the war - their records are not known.
