Memorandum: This is a complete Rentroll of the Bishops Rents at Headley a true copy of which was delivered to James Serle Esq Steward of the said Manor by me Thomas Gatehouse in 1774.

NB. The investigation of these rents which, for want of a regular Roll, had not been collected for many years, and which, by Sir TG's close attention and application for 4 years and upward* by the assistance of a survey taken in 6. Edward VI, and, well knowing, the terminus a quo & ad quem - has at length formed and established such a Rentroll, as affords infinite satisfaction to the Bishop and his tenants, and which now regulates their yearly payments.
* The copies, since Edw 6th time, have been split, divided, and subdivided various times - whence arose the great difficulty in tracing out the lands and their present proprietors
Note from his survey of the 1552 Tithing:-
- A Curtilage, is a Court, Yard, Backside, or piece of Ground lying near, and belonging to, a Dwelling house.
- A Toft, [is] a Messuage, or rather a Place or Piece of Ground, where an House formerly stood, but is decayed or Casually burnt, and not re-erected.
